Where are all the Diques?

Welcome to The Diques website.

If your surname is Dique or you’re related to a Dique, and you want to know more about your Dique ancestry this site may interest you.

Dique is an unusual surname. In Spanish and Portuguese it translates as a dam, dike, dock, levee or bank. The French digue and Dutch dijk have the same meaning.

Many Diques around the world including me can trace their descent to Diques in colonial India. Portuguese settlement in India commenced in the early 16th century so it’s likely the name is Portuguese.

But there’s evidence it could be French and I know of a family of Diques in South Africa with no apparent Indian history.

Whatever the case, I’m sure individual stories of the ‘Dique diaspora’ will fascinate us all, even if gaps in genealogy cannot be plugged.

This site in not yet interactive, so if you wish to share your family history please send me a short narrative at nigel.dique@bigpond.com and any relevant pictures, and I’ll publish them.

Who knows, we may find a common ancestor. But if not, we’ll have fun trying to connect the dots.

Hello world!
